WichtigeFragen: • What are the 3 lines? • Why is it important for us to learn them?
WichtigeAntworten: • They are the different ways you say “the” in German. English has one way to say “the;” German has 12 • The 3 lines are the 3 different cases in German grammar: • Subject (Nominative) • Direct object (Accusative) • Indirect object (Dative) • It is important for you to learn them so that you can speak proper German.
The first line The first line is for subjects. It’s also called the “Nominative” case. Again, these are the different ways to say “the.” There is a masculine form, a feminine form, a neutral form, and a plural form.
The second line The second line is for direct objects. It is also called the “Accusative” case.
The third line The third line is for indirect objects. It is also called the “Dative” case.
For the test…. You will receive an empty table, just like the one above. You will have to fill it in properly.
Why are we doing this? • We will refer to the table all throughout German. • If I say that something relates to the first, second, or third lines, you need to know what I mean.
Also on the test…. • You will receive a map of the German-speaking countries. • You will have to: • label each one of them (in German and in English where necessary • Label the capitol cities, in German and English where necessary.
So, when IS the test? • Your test will be next Tuesday. • We will review for it on Friday. We will also begin chapter 1 (but of course there will be no homework)
