Why all the Biblical Confusion about something as simple as a DAY? There is a principle to let the bible interpret itself. The word “day” appears over 1,500 times in the old and new testaments. The problem is not that the bible does not give us evidence about the word “day,” it is that it gives too many slightly different meanings. And, it was a complete shock to me to discover that even the most common Hebrew word for “day” is yom (pronounced yowm) has variable meanings determined by the context!
“Day” in Your English KJV Bible Old covenant hebrew New covenant greek • Yom/Yowm S#3117 • Yowmam S#3119 • Shachar S#7837 • Boqer S#1242 • Neshep S#5399 • Owr S#216 • Mochorath S#4283 • Hemera S#2250 • Semeron S#4594 • Epaurion S#1887 • Ennuchon S#1773 • Auge S#827 • Arti S#737 • Phosphoros S#5459
When does His Sacred Day Start and End? It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath. Lev. 23: 32
When does a day start and end on Man’s clock The Entire World Uses Midnight or 12:00 AM Some Bible Students Suggest Days begin at Dawn, or Daybreak, at Sunrise about 6:00 AM
How Long is a sacred Day? His sacred day clock is clearly divided into 24 parts which we and the Bible call “hours” Man’s clocks, but not His, are further divided into 60 minutes per hour and each minute is often further divided into 60 seconds. Neither minutes nor seconds are measures of time used on His Sacred Clock or in the Bible. Hours are 7 times in Daniel, 80 times in the NT
A Sacred Day Has 24Divisions called Hours! • Strong’s #8160 (shawah) in Hebrew • Strong’s #5610 (hora) In Greek • Jesus/Yahshua answered, “Are there not twelve hours[horas] in the day?” [John 11: 9] • There was not a measured period of time called an hour with 24 equal periods comprising a day or 12 equal periods comprising daylight during the time of Christ • There were crude “day” clocks called “sun dials”
Natural Divisions of a 24-hour Day • Sunrise • Sunset • Noon • Midnight • Hour • Morning • Daybreak • Daylight • Afternoon (once Jdg 19:8) • Dusk • Twilight • Evening • Night • Yesterday • Today (to day) • Tomorrow
Which element of a Day is found in Scripture? Noon, 12 verses in the OT, 1 verse in the NT. Better understood to be mid-day. Midnight, 7 verses in the OT, 6 in the NT Morning, 197 verses in the OT, 17 in the NT Sunrise, None in early manuscripts Sunset, None in early manuscripts Dawn, None in early manuscripts Dusk, None in early manuscripts Twilight, 9 verses in the Hebrew OT as neshep S#5399, None in the NT; better understood to mean the time of the evening breeze after the sun goes down over the horizon
Especially Confusing Elements of a Day Evening of a Day Hebrew “ereb” 59X OT Greek 5X “opsios” or 2X “hespera” At even: 87 OT, 1X NT “opse” Mark 13:35 Morrow (of, or after) a Day
In the Beginning… Elohim said, “Let there be light.” and there was light. Elohim saw that the light was good and He separated the light from the darkness. Elohim called the light (aur) “day” (yowm) and the darkness (khosshekh) he called “night.” (layil) And there was evening (ereb), and there was morning (boker)—the first day (yowm)” [Genesis 1: 3-5]
A Mind-boggling Discovery The meaning of the Hebrew word yomis not absolute The meaning of yom is determined by the context Yom is better understood as a period of time and can be 12 or 24 hours or even 1,000 years!
Conclusions about a Sacred Day or Days Our Creator made an easy and accurate way to measure time and calls it a day However there is confusion among sincere bible scholars about what a day means even among converted believers in Messiah This study provides reasons for this confusion and a warning about trusting verses in our English bibles for revealed Truth This study attempts to clarify a number of widely held beliefs and doctrines proclaimed within the body of Messiah. If you disagree, please let me know why as I want to learn the Truth and repent of any false knowledge, understanding or wisdom. Similar studies about the meaning of a sacred month or year can also be presented as we move from kindergarten to college.
