Analyze and interpret results of scientific investigations. • Learning Goal for Day 1 Lesson: for students to realize chemicals can be found all around them and are used in their daily routines.
Opening Preparation • Do now: Student fact sheet • Class Expectations • Pictures and chemical names
First Day Agenda • Greet Students at the Door • Students choose their own seats for the first week or so • Fill out a ‘fact sheet’ when they sit down, acts as a first day ‘do now’ • Share with the class one thing from the fact sheet • Intro to chemistry activity • Incorporates student names • Video • Go over class expectations
Opening Activity • Common Chemical Matching Activity • Individual students are given a picture of a common item or a chemical name • Students will have 5 minutes to guess their match • Teacher will read a short story and as the items appear will ask students what they matched with. • Short stories go along with most pictures
Homework Assignment • Chose a toiletry product that you use everyday like your facewash or shampoo and pick one of the chemicals in the ingredients list. Research that chemicals function in your product. We will share these with the class tomorrow. 12 Ah! The element of surprise
