Characters • Dr. Watson- Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick and he looks up to Holmes • Dr. Mortimer- a highly respected nerve doctor, who is very scared about the Hound in the moor. • Sir Henry Baskerville- a man that is about the age of 30 and who is a descendant of Hugo Baskerville
Purpose of Chapter/events • The purposes of this chapter is to introduce the moor. • Dr. Mortimer, Dr. Watson, and Sir Henry Baskerville all boarded a train for Devonshire but Sherlock Holmes didn’t accompany them. • When they arrive at the Devonshire. Dr. Watson sees soldiers everywhere. He later learns that a prisoner has escaped from Princetown.
Events continued • When Dr. Watson and Sir Henry reach Baskerville Hall a man comes out and offers to make him dinner. • Dr. Mortimer could stay for dinner. • After dinner the man asks if he can leave the Hall with his family because he believes it is not safe.

Quotes On the platform Dr. Watson thinks about the suspects “There are the two moorland farmers, there is Dr. Mortimer whom we believe to be entirely honest, and there is his wife of whom we know nothing. There is this naturalist Stapleton, and there is his sister, who is said to be a young lady of attractions. There is Mr. Frankland, of Lafter Hall, who is also an unknown factor” and the convict that escaped from Princetown, who is the Notting Hill murderer(Conan Doyle 54) Dr. Watson is on the train and he is watching the scenery “The road in front of us grew bleaker and wilder over huge russets and olive slopes, sprinkled with giant boulders.” When Sir Henry Baskerville and Dr. Watson arrive at the Hall, a Servant asks if he can leave the Hall and Henry says “Do you mean that your wife and you wish to leave?” (Conan Doyle 59)
