1- Associated countries ► Same prerogatives as Member States 2- International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC): Countries neighbouring the EU (Mediterranean Partner Countries, Western Balkans, Eastern European and Central Asian Countries) Developing countries (ACP, ASIA, Latin America) Emerging economies (e.g. China, India, Brazil, Russia, South Africa) ► Funded 3- Industrialised countries (USA, Canada, Japan, Australia….) ► Funded only exceptionally International cooperation: categories of countries
EEA: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands Switzerland Israel Turkey WBC: Albania, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina Countries associated to FP7
Specific International Cooperation Activities (SICA): Specific topic, participation of third country partners ensured Targeted opening: the participation of third country partners in consortia is particularly well suited for international cooperation, to be reflected in the evaluation. Coordinated calls: an FP call that is coordinated with a similar call or "solicitation" issued by a funding agency in a third country. Twinning: 'Twinning' represents a way of promoting cooperation between projects independently generated and funded under the FP and under third country research funding schemes
International Activities in Wps 2007-2008-2009-2010 All countries MPCs
International cooperation is growing, but an active role and strong initiative are required to potential third countries participants… Some countries are way below potential (Japan, Korea, US,…) Success rates can be improved (Latin America, Mediterranean,…) Several themes have limited international coop. (ICT, NMP, TPT,…) Targeting plays a key role (over 60%) National matching funds can be further encouraged (Japan,…) Main trends and lessons 2007-2008
STRUCTURING THE “DEMAND” Agreements Regional dialogues Priority setting / roadmaps GOVERNING THE “SUPPLY” NCP’s INCO tools Targeted calls Co-funding schemes National matching funds What makes a difference? (today)
Resources Modalities + instruments Reciprocity Strategic objectives Synergies with EC assistance programmes Synergies with M.S. activities What could make a difference? (tomorrow)
