What do engineers do? • Mechanical engineers design devices which harness mechanical and thermal energy. • Most mechanical engineers work in an office environment. • Engineers must be able to work in a team because they must cooperate with experts in many fields. • Mechanical engineers use computers heavily. • There are many opportunities for management and education in the field of engineering.
What education is needed? • A Bachelor’s degree in science is a minimum; although many engineers go on to receive a graduate degree. • Students will study math and science as well as engineering courses. • Computer education is becoming increasingly important. • Good engineering schools in Texas include Texas A&M, The University of Texas, Texas Tech, Rice University, and others.
Why be an engineer? • Engineers enjoy a high starting salary with the ability to rise up the ladder. The median salary for engineers in 2012 was $80,580. • Those who enjoy math and science will probably enjoy engineering. • There are many diverse opportunities for mechanical engineers due to the field’s diversity.
