Types of Elevator Lift Systems The idea behind all elevators is the same: attach a lifting system to a compartment built into a hoist way. But elevators get much more complicated once you introduce different kinds of lifting mechanisms. Depending on what is most important to you – a smooth ride or energy saver, for example – you might best be served by a particular type of elevator and lifting system. There are a variety of different hoist mechanisms used to lift and lower elevator cabs. The most familiar types of elevator systems are: hydraulic, traction, climbing, and pneumatic. Hydraulic elevators Hydraulic elevators are typically used in low-rise applications (2-8 story buildings), and move up and down via a piston that supports the elevator cab from the bottom. The maximum traveling speed of these hoist systems is about 200 feet per minute, with the maximum traveling height lying anywhere between 20-60 feet, dependent upon the type of hydraulic system used. There are numerous types of hydraulic systems including: holed, hole-less, telescopic, non-telescoping, and roped hydraulic elevator systems.
Traction elevators Traction elevators use ropes that pass over a wheel attached to a motor that sits above the elevator shaft. These elevators are used for mid- to high-rise applications due to their increased speeds and maximum traveling heights. There are three types of traction elevators used today: geared, gear-less, and machine-room-less.
Climbing elevators Climbing elevators have their own electric or combustion engines mounted to them. You'll often find these types of elevators used in construction areas and other work-zones.
Pneumatic elevators The pneumatic vacuum elevator, or PVE, is the newest innovation in elevator design. PVE’s are revolutionary because they do not require cables, chains, pistons, or counterweights, but instead use the hoist way itself as part of the lifting system. Composed of a tube-shaped cab in a tube-shaped hoist way, the pneumatic vacuum elevator uses parts that fit perfectly together. This is necessary in order to maintain precise atmospheric pressures above and below the cab. The lifting action occurs when pressure is reduced above the cab, causing it to rise to fill the void. To descend, a control valve slowly releases pressure, creating a cushion of air beneath the cab. This makes for an energy-conscious elevator since energy is needed almost exclusively to lift the cab and not to lower it.
