  2. HUG Meeting - W. Pence HEASOFT Status • HEASOFT 5.2 was released in June 2002 • Main components: • Xanadu: Xspec, Xronos, & Ximage • FTOOLS: ~350 tasks in 15 packages; ~4 Million LOC • 600+ installations • 450 Linux • 105 SunOS • ?? Mac OS-X (no automatic registration) • 36 OSF • 9 other • Next HEASOFT 5.3 release will coincide with first public release of the Swift data analysis software in Sept/Oct 2003. • Interim enhancement and bug fix patches to HEASOFT 5.2 are released as needed.

  3. HUG Meeting - W. Pence Recent HEASOFT Developments • Xselect now provides full compatibility with CIAO and XMM SAS. • automatically builds RMFs and ARFs for extracted spectra • see http://lheawww.gsfc.nasa.gov/users/kaa/xselect/xselect.html • XSPEC v12 nearing completion for Summer 2003 release. • Numerous tools enhanced to support INTEGRAL format conventions: • Different HDU naming convention • Uses Type II PHA and ARF formats • Times in units of days instead of seconds • Hierarchical grouping of 100s of files (fv navigates the hierarchy) • 8 new CGRO tasks have been implemented. • fhelp now integrated with the Chandra and XMM-SAS help facilities. • Fortran-77 dependencies removed; now builds with Fortran-90. • Windows/Cygwin port nearly complete. • HEADAS is now fully developed and integrated with HEASOFT.

  4. HUG Meeting - W. Pence HEADAS: The Software Environment for New Missions • Was becoming too cumbersome to add more packages to FTOOLS. • HEADAS was developed using lessons learned from FTOOLS. • Uses INTEGRAL PIL for parameter interface and CFITSIO as data layer. • Core HEADAS system is written entirely in ANSI-C for portability. • Supported on Unix platforms, and (planned) Windows PCs. • Individual missions can use C, C++, or Fortran if desired. • Templates make it easy for programmers to develop new tasks. • Includes a multi-mission set of FITS file utility programs (fdump, fsort,..). • Designed to support simultaneous multiple mission S/W development. • HEADAS is an independent package, yet it integrates seamlessly with the older HEASOFT packages. • Users should notice no difference between HEADAS and FTOOLS tasks. • Swift is the first package developed using HEADAS. • Astro-E software (re)development will begin soon. • Will promote HEADAS for use by other mission software developers.

  5. HUG Meeting - W. Pence Hera: Data Analysis over the Internet • Hera is a new service offered by the HEASARC. • It enables full data analysis over the Internet. • Scientist saves data sets from the HEASARC archive to the Hera server. • ‘fv’ functions as the graphical interface for doing interactive data analysis. • The full set of HEASOFT tasks is available to users. • Hera simplifies the data analysis process: • no local software installation • no large downloads of raw data sets • creates links to the Browse archive • graphical interface provides user help • Makes data more accessible to non-experts. • Customized interfaces can also be provided. • e.g., for educational projects using real data

  6. HUG Meeting - W. Pence Hera Status • Hera was recently made publicly available; little usage experience yet. • Hera currently provides all the functionality needed by expert users. • All Xanadu and Ftools tasks are functional. • All data files catalogued in the HEASARC archive are available for analysis. Future Plans: • The 3 years of initial AISRP development funding ended in November. • Plan to apply for ADP funding for further major enhancements in 2004. • Will continue limited development and operations using existing resources. • Priority will be given to developing automated analysis scripts for RXTE, based on existing recipes published on the Web.

  7. HUG Meeting - W. Pence Other Popular HEASARC Software • CFITSIO: The standard FITS file interface library • 400-500 downloads per month • Approximately 4 new updates released each year • fv: Popular FITS file viewer and editor • 300-700 downloads per month • Agreed at the Nov 2002 HEADCC meeting to integrate fv more closely with ds9 for image display and graphics.
