  2. You will have 15-20 additional minutes to complete your SLO assessment. • Everyone else may either: • Work on narrative assignment (should be finished by now!) • Study Beowulf/Grendel comprehension questions and literary terms.

  3. CCGPS ELACC11-12L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

  4. CCGPS ELACC11-12L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing

  5. CCGPS ELACC11-12W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Body Paragraph: Supporting Details. • Topic Sentence: (Focus of the paragraph) • 1 of the supporting points of the controlling idea. • Concrete Details: (No more than 2) • A specific fact/detail that explains the significance of the topic sentence. • Explanation: (Provides support to Concrete Detail) • A specific fact, detail, or point that explains the significance of the topic sentence.

  11. Simpler Version Topic Sentence: Why is the topic sentence important? Elaborate on the details of the importance.

  12. Supporting Details Supporting details are specific statements that are related to the topic of the paragraph. Ex. Michael Jordan displayed an unwavering work ethic in his path to becoming one of basketball’s all time greats. When he was just a sophomore at Laney High School, Jordan was cut from the varsity basketball team. Instead of giving up, he used the setback as motivation to fuel him throughout his playing career. Jordan has shared with the media on numerous occasions that he often closes his eyes and pictures his name missing from the list of those who made the basketball team. This visualization keeps Jordan hungry and provides him with the motivation needed to continue working hard.

  13. Class Activity • “Queen Elizabeth” essay handed back. • Fill out the “Writing Effective Body Paragraphs” worksheet. • If you had GOOD supporting points or a controlling idea, use them. • Follow the instructions given in your notes.

  14. Topic Should a woman be allowed to lead a country during times of war or peace? Use Queen Elizabeth’s speech as support.

  15. Controlling Idea Topic Focus: (Positive/Negative, Support/Against) 3 supporting points. Controlling Idea: (Topic + Focus +3 supporting points) Now, write a paragraph in which you fully support one of your topic sentences.

  16. CP: Discuss through topic • What is the topic? • What is the prompt asking us to do? • What are we discussing/arguing? • How should we begin?

  17. Mid-Unit Test Please take about 15 minutes to review for your test. When you are finished with your test, please resume working on your body paragraph worksheet from last class period.
