The Power of HabitWhy we do what we do in life and business Presentation By: Patrick Hammond
Three Parts • The Habits of Individuals • The Loop, The Craving, The Golden Rule • The Habits of Successful Organizations • Keystone Habits, Willpower, Crisis, Prediction • The Habits of Societies • Movements, Free Will
“Once we choose who we want to be, people grow ‘to the way in which they have been exercised, just as a sheet of paper or a coat, once creased or folded, tends to fall forever afterward into the same identical folds.”
Habits • What? • A habit is a fixed way of thinking or acting that occurs unconsciously • Habits are at the root of how we behave • Why? • Habits are formed as a means for the brain to save energy • Where? • The basal ganglia • How?..
The Loop Cue Trigger Routine Physical/Mental/Emotional Reward Makes it worth it The cue and reward become intertwined creating a craving
The Craving • An anticipation of the reward • Smoking • Key aspect in marketing • Toothpaste • Febreze
The Golden Rule • If we keep the same cue and the same reward, a new routine can be inserted • Tony Dungy • Key to winning was changing the players’ habits • “Champions don’t do extraordinary things, they do ordinary things, but they do them without thinking” • Habits cannot be erased, they must be replaced • First you must believe change is possible
Within Organizations and Companies • Keystone habits • Some habits matter more than others, i.e. safety • Small wins, creating structure, creating cultures • Willpower • Learnable skill but also like a muscle • Crisis • A sense that something must change • Prediction • Sticky songs • Listening habits • Making the unfamiliar familiar
Within Society • Movements • Friendships and strong ties • Weak ties • Feeling of ownership • Free Will • “I almost won!” or “I almost lost!”
The Power of Habit • Habits CAN be changed • Once you see a bad habit it is your responsibility to remake it “You now know how to redirect that path. You now have the power to swim.”
