Mise-en-scene A term taken from French theatre which refers to everything which is ‘put in the scene’ of a film, for example: • Setting/location • Props • Costume • Colour • Lighting • Facial expressions/body gestures
His wide eyes make him look as if he has been awake for ages. • The way he sits makes him look weak and vulnerable. • His expression is a bit blank – he doesn’t look excited about what he is doing. He looks a bit bored.
Denotation (describe) When we look at the denotations of an image, we are looking to describe exactly what we see. Describe what you see in the next image:
Some examples: • Blue • Windscreen • Sky • Clouds • Mountains • Wheels
Connotation (associated meanings) • Blue (boys, masculine, cool) • Mountains (adventure, freedom, danger)
Mise-en-scene in ‘KTAH’ Your task: Use one colour for denotations and another for connotations as you do the same activity with a still from the film. Start with all the denotations you can see.
