  2. Blu-ray Disc • Name is derived from blue-violet laser used to read and write discs • First commercial player launched in 2006 • Sony’s Playstation 3 video game console also launched in late 2006 with a built in Blu-ray player costing $499 for a 20GB and $599 for the 60GB

  3. Blu-ray Advantages • It can store 25 GB of data on each layer • 50 GB on dual layer disc • There is about 9 hours of high definition video on a dual layer Blu-ray disc • It can store 30% more capacity than HD-DVD

  4. Blu-ray Disadvantages • Discs are more costly to produce than HD-DVDs • The cheapest Blu-ray players run about 500-600 dollars at this time and cheaper players such as the Samsung BD-P100 has been getting very mixed reviews • Discs are still distributed by regions

  5. Blu-Ray Support • Major supporters: Hewlett Packard, Apple, Dell, Panasonic, Sony, 20th Century Fox, Disney, New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers • Sony owns Columbia Pictures and recently bought MGM Studios which will give Blu-ray exclusive video content not released on the HD-DVD format

  6. HD-DVD • The First HD-DVD player was released in April of 2006 in the United States • The discs were developed as a successor to the standard DVD • Microsoft’s Xbox 360 did not come with an HD-DVD player standard but has since release an add-on for the console.

  7. HD-DVD Advantages • A more natural evolution from DVD’s allowing large amounts of High Definition video to be stored at lower production and manufacturing costs • Was released before Blu-ray giving it a natural market lead • Discs are region free allowing for faster distribution

  8. HD-DVD Disadvantages • Cannot boast the same storage capacity as Blu-Ray (15GB single layer, 30GB dual layer) • There is only 1 major Hollywood studio that exclusively supports HD-DVD (Universal) While 5 major Hollywood studios support Blu-ray (Columbia Pictures, MGM, Disney, Lionsgate, & 20th Century Fox)

  9. HD-DVD Support • Major Supporters: Toshiba, Sanyo, NEC, Warner Bros, Dreamworks, HBO, Universal, and Microsoft • Support from Microsoft for it’s new Vista operating system will give HD-DVD an edge

  10. The Numbers-Movie Sales Movie Sales from October 2006 through February 2007 with projected sales through April 2007. At the moment Blu-ray sales are more than 2-1 in their favor

  11. The Numbers-HD Player Sales • In February 2007, the NPD Group (a consumer electronic marketing firm) reported that the total market share of all stand alone HD players in the United States totaled 52% for HD DVD and 48% for Blu-ray.

  12. Conclusion • With HD-DVDs head start in the market they established a good base of HD players. As of lately Blu-ray has been quickly catching up. Blu-rays movie titles are outselling HD-DVDs at the moment by 2-1 and are only expected to keep rising.
