  2. What is ANVIL ? Major European Initiative • Created from a contract let by the Joint Research Centre • Not a single short term project • Maintained by active support of the GI industry. .

  3. Why ANVIL? • The need for a GIS permanent development infrastructure to enhance EU interoperability • Increased need for a demonstrator to facilitate the “take-up” of GI standards (particularly within ISO TC211 and OGC • Demonstrator: Product Independent Portal • Product to be used first as a service by NMA’s and then by other GI and IT Vendors

  4. ANVIL Mission Statement • Promote take-up of geo-spatial services using International Standards, such as ISO and OGC, throughout Europe and beyond. • Accelerate the linking and exploitation of interoperable geo-spatial data and services, within both government and business across Europe.

  5. ANVIL Goals • Provide key value-added services for the piloting, testing and linking of disparate information resources • Become a service agent to industry and government for channeling and supporting European geo-information work of all types. • Stimulate GI services and improve product time to market, particularly for SMEs. • Provide a Web portal clearinghouse for International Standards’ information

  6. Manage pilot projects and testing which assist client organizations to conform to International GI Standards. Government agencies will be able to exploit pilots as a means to test-integrate multiple technologies, without the need for open tender. Tests of compatibility and interoperability of GI Standards against current products will produce cost saving results. Services (1)

  7. The use of an independent server to run standards compliant components against customer data. Customer data will be shown through the demonstrator of how it appears when using GI standards. Seperate data sources will be added to the demonstrator to show interoperability through GI standards Services (2)

  8. FAST :Framework Advisory Service for Technology Assist funding agencies in the project selection pahse Assist in matching investment with products Assist in clustering compatible projects PATH: Pilots and Test Handling Service to manage pilot testing Bring SME’s and Larger org’s together Create technology synergies using acceptedstandards as their basis rather than creating the standards. Services (3)

  9. Services (4) Consulting • Participation in FP5/FP6 projects • Participant match making • Building Strategies • Licensing and Membership • Multiple levels of participation • Two subscription levels

  10. What next? • Build a demonstrator • Find sponsors for the initial funding • Talks with NMAs to use datasets will take place • Making the business plan happen
