He thinks Herman E. Calloway is his father because of a picture his mom had of him playing a fiddle. Bud is a orphan who ran away from the Home. He is a little strong and cries a lot, he takes what life gives him.

He plays a giant fiddle in a band called “Dusky Devastators of the Depression .” At first he doesn’t know what Bud is talking about and then he hears his daughters name and Bud knows he is family.

She is the singer of Herman’s band and Bud thinks she sings like an angel. Throughout Bud, Not Buddy she is helping Herman get closer with Bud.

7. Setting The book Bud, Not Buddy is set back in the time of “The Great Depression.” Being set in this time means characters might be poor, have no jobs or even be wandering the streets. It changes the mood of the story and makes it seem all dull and boring.

8. Plot + External Conflict Bud wanted to find his father but he had to find a way out of The Home and get to Grand Rapids. Along the way he ran way from a foster home and it was very challenging. He was punched around by the families son, Todd Amos and was forced to sleep in a shed.

9. Internal Conflict During the time of the book where Bud gets to HooverVille he meets Deza Melone. While washing dishes she asks Bud if he has kissed a girl and he said, “No.” After she kisses Bud on the lips and he is shocked about what just happened. She agrees not to tell anyone if Bud doesn’t tell anyone.
