  5. Family members: Glum & Tum Imposters: Sum & Crum

  6. Angle measures are the same!

  7. Yes, the findings support the prediction that the impostors will be Sum and Crum! Impostors are those who have different scale factors applied to the x and y coordinates. In other words…rules that the x & y are multiplied by the same number make family members!

  8. 2 questions before we move on… • Can you describe to your neighbor what scale factor means? • the # you multiply the lengths of an original figure by to stretch or shrink it • What might be some examples in the real world where scale factors might be used? • Movie screens, logos, billboards, blue prints, photographs, copied images, clip art …

  9. You Need: Calculator 2.1 Lab sheet from 2.1 Grid Sheet yesterday BIG IDEA: Drawing and Identifying Similar Figures Make sure your notebook cover sheet looks like this: #. Date Brief Description 1. 10-3 S&S Problem 2.1 day 1/ ACE (1 a-e) 2. 10-4 S&S Problem 2.1 day 2/ ACE (14-15)

  10. Let’s look back at yesterday’s lab sheet on the back of your homework… • How would you describe to a friend the growth of the figures that you drew? • They all increased in size…taller…or wider…or both! • Which members seem to belong to the Wump family? And which do NOT? • Mug, Zug and Bug have the same shape but Lug and Glug are distorted.

  11. Are Lug and Glug related? • NO! • Lug is WIDE and SHORT • Glug is NARROW and TALL

  12. How do the corresponding angles of the 5 characters compare? • Family members (Mug, Zug, and Bug) have the SAME angle measures! • The others (Lug and Glug) do NOT have the same angle measures…EXCEPT for the right angles, of course!!

  13. Now, let’s look at the corresponding lengths of the characters… ► leg heights  1, 2, 3 ► nose widths  2, 4, 6 ► mouth widths  4, 8, 12 Did you notice any patterns?

  14. Make sure your notebook cover sheet looks like this: • #. Date Brief Description • 1. 10-3 S&S Problem 2.1 day 1/ ACE (1 a-e) • 2. 10-4 S&S Problem 2.1 day 2/ ACE (14-15) Homework is on page 33 in Stretching and Shrinking
