So we met ….. • Seeking broader partnership • February 2001, TRADITIONAL partners, TB controllers + Canadian Lung association + UNION • NEW Partners, RESULTS, Academics, professional associations, ID specialists, Thoracic Society, Canadian nursing, Interagency coalition on Aids and development (ICAD), NGOs • Mission: to support the Government of Canada in reaching G-8 goal of reducing TB by 50% by 2010 through education, co-ordination, communication and advocacy • Website, Coordinating board, Monthly conference calls • Annual World TB day celebration • Response to emergencies, eg HQ funding • Need for linkages • Discovered other STOP TB in-country partnerships

Other STOP TB country orgs • Uganda- Dec 10-04 Joseph Kawuma, country-wide MPs Business, AIDS groups • Russia- Wieslaw Jabowiak WHO rep meetings with ministries of states, TB /HIV programs but ?? how to engage civil society; annual press prize • Italy- Daniela Cirillo: training course for managers, meeting on TB and immigration, fund raising for research, ‘07 offer to host training course in STOP TB partnerships • Mexico- Roberto Tapia, country wide, strong support for NTP, model for evaluation of impact

Other STOP TB orgs • Sudan - Asma El Sony NTP director and grassroots activities to stop TB in Sudan, to build community coalition, with local committee DOTS’ supporters, universities in 26 states, elementary schools, prisons, military establishments, private sector, patient associations • Nigeria- Nasir Sani Gwarzo inter-agency committee of NGOs and other sectors as STOP TB Committee of Nigeria. Mobilization is beginning, government is talking more about TB and case detection has increased 30% over the past year. • Indonesia- Carmelia Basari- Gerdunas(STOP TB) Indonesia 44 partners probably the first ..-good knowledge and experience on how to engage at provincial levels local government and community based organizations.

In industrialized countries, low rates, disease in marginalized populations, foreign born, aboriginal, dispossessed • Forgotten In low income countriesHIV co-infection , rates rising , overwhelming control programs ; Health sector reform, and infrastructure decay impede good control • Limited funds, human resources In Both: Lack of political will, delayed treatment allows transmission and poor treatment leads to drug resistance Both need Advocacy Communication and Social mobilization

  15. Proposal:that ALL nations initiate a StopTB movement to accelerate social and political action to stop the unnecessary spread of tuberculosis around the world, linked to GFATM and relevant trade and debt issues
