Ancient Olympics The first recorded distance events were run during the ancient Olympics. They were run in stadiums that varied from 1400 meter to 4800 meters.
Marathons Marathon running was inspired by an Athenian military courier named Phidippides who ran approximately 26 miles from the Plains of Marathon to Athens. In the 1896 Olympics the marathon was first formally run along with the 1500 m, 3,000m, 5000m, and 10,000m runs. In 2011, Geoffrey Mutai ran the fastest marathon ever recorded in 2 hours, 3minutes and 2 seconds. However, his time did not count as a record because the Boston Marathon does not qualify as a record breaking course.
Sub 4 min Mile On May 6, 1954 Roger Bannister ran the first sub-4 minute mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds.
Steve Prefontaine • Steve Prefontaine was one of the best American distance runners in history. He held every American track record from the 2000m to the 10,000 meters. • In high school Steve Prefontaine’s primary event was the two mile. He set a national record of 8 minutes and 41 seconds in it.
Two Mile • The two mile run was first ran professionally in the early 1900s. The first two mile record was 9 minutes and17 seconds. • Since then the two mile has dramatically decreased in time. • The current world record in 7 minutes and 58 seconds by Daniel Komen of Kenya
Hicham El Guerrouj Hicham El Guerrouj has the world record for the 1500 meters and the mile. His mile record was set at Rome in 1999. He ran it in 3 minutes and 43.14 seconds.
Ultra Marathons • Ultra Marathons are any distance over 26.2 miles, which is a traditional marathon. • The most popular ultra marathon in the United States is the Western States Endurance Run. It takes place in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is 100 miles long and began in 1974 a man attempted to do the Western States Trail Ride without a horse on foot.
Alan Webb • Alan Web was one of the fastest American distance runners in history. He currently has the American mile record, which is 3 minutes and 46.91 seconds. After he set the record four years ago he has been battling injuries and his fitness has suffered.
