August 6, 1945 • In order to stop Japan, the U.S.A. decides to use the atomicbomb: President Truman (Roosevelt’ssuccessor) gives the order to drop the two bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki • U.S. Bomber “Enola Gay” drops the first bomb on Hiroshima, kills 70 000 instantly, another 130 000 severely wounded • People vaporized, burned by radiation, crushed by collapsed buildings
Atomic Bomb • Second bomb dropped on Nagasaki three days later, kills 40 000 people • Power of the atomic bomb puts an end to the war • Emperor Hirohito surrenders August 15, whichmarks the official end of the Second World War
