What do engineers do? Engineering specializations at Mercer University Other engineering specializations Concluding remarks / Questions Overview
Apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical and safe solutions to technical problems. Design and develop new products. Consumer electronics, cell phones, buildings, bridges, power plants, and aircraft. What do Engineers do?
Supervise production in factories. Test manufactured products to maintain quality. Determine the cause(s) of component failure(s).
Some of the Things that Make Mercer Engineering Special • Small class sizes. • Critical focus on design and teamwork experience • in preparation for professional practice. • Emphasis on communications. • Opportunity to take one of 26 minors e.g. art, music • theatre, accounting. • Integrated undergraduate/graduate [5 year] • programs.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacture of electrical equipment Communications systems. Power generation, control, and transmission devices used by electric utilities. Electrical systems and electronics of automobiles and aircraft.
Design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacture of • Computer systems. • Related hardware equipment such as keyboards, routers, and printers. • Software systems that control computers.
Mechanical Engineering Design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacture of machines and other mechanical devices Internal combustion engines. Steam and gas turbines. Elevators and escalators.
Refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment. • Industrial production equipment such as robots used in manufacturing. • Tools that other engineers need for their work.
Biomedical Engineering Design and develop devices used in various medical procedures Imaging systems such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Devices for automating insulin injections or controlling body functions.
Prostheses (artificial devices that replace missing body parts).
Environmental Engineering Use the principles of biology and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. Involved in water and air pollution control. Recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues.
Design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems. Conduct research on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.
Industrial Engineering Increasing productivity through effective use of the basic factors of production—people, machines, materials, information, and energy. Develop management control systems projects. Design or improve systems for the efficient production and distribution of goods and services.
Technical Communication Communication of technical information through writing, visual design (diagrams, graphics, charts) and multimedia (sound, animation) . User-interface design: analyzing the user's needs and building usability in the product design.
Usability testing: analyzing difficulties customers have using product and its technical information. Globalization/localization/translation: making documents easy to translate or adapt for a specific country. Instructional design: the development of "courseware" and technical training. Web master
Civil Engineering Design and supervise the construction of: Roads Buildings Dams / bridges Water supply and sewage systems.
Chemical Engineering Design and develop equipment and processes for manufacturing of chemical products. Work in a variety of manufacturing industries such as chemical manufacturing, electronics, food, clothing, and paper.
Engineering Link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs. Apply principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.
