Converting Between SI and Imperial Systems Section 1.3
Convert from SI to Imperial Plan the Flight A commercial airliner flies at a speed of 950 km/h. It carries enough fuel for 6 hours of flight. The distance from Vancouver to Miami is 3350 mi. Can the airliner be used on a direct flight from Vancouver to Miami?
Convert from SI to Imperial Plan the Flight Determine how far the plane can fly in 6 hours. Distance during flight = Distance in one hour × number of hours Distance during flight = 950 × 6 Distance during flight = 5700 The plane can fly 5700 km in 6 hours. Convert this distance to miles. 1 km = 0.6214 mi Distance in mi = Distance in km × 0.6214 Distance in mi = 5700 × 0.6214 Distance in mi = 3542 The plane has enough fuel to fly 3542 mi. The distance from Vancouver to Miami is 3350 mi. Therefore, the plane has enough fuel to make a direct flight from Vancouver to Miami.
Convert from SI to Imperial Plan the Flight Did You Know? A pilot must take wind into account when planning a flight. A plane flying into a headwind requires more time for the flight. The plane may not have enough fuel to reach the destination. In planning the flight, the pilot must also allow fuel to reach an alternate destination, plus a reserve of fuel for another 45 minutes of flight.
Convert from Imperial to Imperial Buying Lumber You need 16 wooden ceiling braces, each 18 in. long. You have two sizes of boards from which to cut your braces, 8 ft and 12 ft. From what length of board should you cut the braces to avoid wasting any wood?
Convert from Imperial to Imperial Buying Lumber 1 ft = 12 in. Convert each board length into inches. Length in in. = Length in ft × 12 in. Length in in. = 8 × 12 Length in in. = 96 96 ÷ 18 = 5.33 You could cut approximately 5.33 braces from an 8-ft board. An 8-ft board does not result in a whole number of braces, so wood is wasted. Length in ft × 12 in. = Length in in. 12 × 12 = 144 144 ÷ 18 = 8 A 12-ft board results in a whole number of 18-in. braces. No wood is wasted. To get 16 braces, you would need two 12-ft boards.
Convert from Imperial to Imperial Buying Lumber Did you know? A ceiling brace does not need to be a solid beam of wood. A truss design is just as strong, and much lighter.
Convert from SI to SI Plan a Canoe Trip You are planning a canoe trip down the Great Bear River from Fort Norman to Fort Franklin. Your map has a scale of 1 : 50 000. The length of the route on the map is 21 cm. How far will you paddle? Express your answer in km.
Convert from SI to SI Plan a Canoe Trip 1 cm on the map represents 500 000 cm on land. Actual distance = Distance on map × 500 000 Actual distance = 21 × 500 000 Actual distance = 10 500 000 21 cm represents 10 500 000 cm. 1 m = 100 cm. Distance in m = Distance in cm ÷ 100 cm Distance in m = 10 500 000 ÷ 100 Distance in m = 105 000 21 cm on the map represents 105 000 m.
Convert from SI to SI Plan a Canoe Trip 1 km = 1000 m. Distance in km = Distance in m ÷ 1000 Distance in km = 105 000 ÷ 1000 Distance in km = 105 The canoe’s route is 105 km in length.
Convert from SI to SI Plan a Canoe Trip Did You Know? The current in the Great Bear River averages about 12 km/h. Canoeists can paddle with the current, but must be towed by a motorboat to return.
