  1. Local Stream Contamination Sarah Eggleston

  2. The quality of ones water is important. • Airports say it is their primary concern. • Deicing chemicals are used on aircrafts, then runoff into nearby streams causing contamination. • They contaminate both ground and surface water.

  3. Deicing Chemical • These chemicals are biodegradable and threatening to aquatic life. It breaks down in water and consumes oxygen. • Deicers work to break up snow or ice so that it can be removed more easily. The chemicals work by dissolving slowly on contact, while some chemicals help to melt the ice or snow. • Chemical deicers typically are various chloride salts: calcium, magnesium, potassium, or sodium. These five chemicals and combinations of them account for essentially all roadway deicers, with CaCl2 being the most effective and most popular.

  4. Cumulative exposures to deicing fluids and their chemical components present a major concern to human health, animal welfare, and the environment. • These chemicals if used should be contained and kept in a contained area away from streams and runoffs. • The lethal dose in adults is 1.4 ml or 3.3 fl. No studies have been done on its effects on humans. However, each winter large amounts of fish and wildlife are poisoned to death by aircraft deicing chemicals.

  5. The sweet taste of the deicers fools animals of its toxicity , and occasionally it has led to the death of animals that have licked up deicers that has leaked onto the ground. • When ingested, it depresses the central nervous system and can be fatal to humans even in small quantities. • The aquatic life in the streams is effected along with the animals which drink from the streams. • As this chemical runs into local areas and sinks into the ground these chemicals work their way into the near by wells and water holds.

  6. Lawsuits across the nation have been made to stop the runoff of deicers from airports. • Airports have standards they are supposed to follow and must have a agreement in order to let chemicals run off into streams. • But, who is to stop them and who is to know of the runoff into nearby streams. No one if one complains or becomes ill or dies.

  7. I feel deicers should be contained better then they say they are being contained. • The water we drink and live around in contaminated by the chemicals of the airport. • I am against the deicing method of aircrafts and if something must be used it should be a non toxic chemical or controlled better.
