  3. Napoleon’s Reforms • ORDER to France! • Strengthened central government • Controlled prices, encouraged industry, built roads and canals • Made peace with Church in Concordat of 1801 • Opened jobs to all based on talent! • Napoleonic Code • Enlightenment ideas (but not for ALL women)

  4. Napoleon Builds an Empire • Brilliant military leader! Conquered most of Europe by 1812 • TRIES to take Britain: Battle of Trafalgar 1805 • Then tries to hurt their ECONOMY: Continental System • Nationalism starts to tear empire apart! • Russian winter kills 5 out of 6 as he doesn’t retreat soon enough! • Russia uses SCORCHED EARTH POLICY

  6. Napoleon’s Fall • 1813: Abdicates, and France recognized Louis XVII as King of France • Napoleon sneaks away from island of Elba and comes BACK to France! March 1815 • Nap. Finally crushed at WATERLOO June 1815

  7. Napoleon’s Legacy? • Napoleonic Code still around in some form! • France becomes a centralized state with a constitution • Rights to property and education increased • Sparked NATIONALIST feelings among Europe • U.S. impact? Louisiana Purchase 1803…War of 1812 related to Napoleonic Wars!
