  2. What is Buddhism? The goal for Buddhism is to attain nirvana, a state of complete peace in which one is free from the distractions of desire and self-consciousness.

  3. History • Creator of Buddhism • Birth: 580 BC • Buddha Siddhartha Gautama • Location: Lumbini, Southern Nepal • Left Southern Nepal at the age of 29 • Set on a path to teach people “Enlightenment”

  4. Four Noble Truths • Foundation of Buddhism • 1. Dukkha – Truth of Suffering • 2. Samudaya – Truth of the cause of suffering • 3. Nirhodha – Truth of the end of suffering • 4. Magga – Truth of the path that frees us from suffering

  5. Rituals • Meditation – Mental concentration and mindfulness • Mantras – Sounds • Mudras – Symbolic movementof the hand • Prayer Wheel – Recite Mantras with the turn of a wheel

  6. Leaders of Buddhism • ThichNhatHanh • Born: 1926 • Founded the School of Youth for Social Services (SYSS) in Saigon, Vietnam • Studied at Princeton University • Lectured at Cornell University and Colombia University • Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize (1967)

  7. Tenzin Gyatso Dalai Lama • 14th Dalai Lama • Born: 1935 in Tibet • Leader of Tibetan people • Left for India in 1959 • First Dalai Lama to travel to the West • Noble Peace Prize (1989) • State Congressional Gold Metal (2007)

  8. Master Cheng Yen • Born: 1937 • Female • Taiwanese Buddhist Nun/Teacher • Founder of Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu-Chi Foundation • Provides active help for the Myanmar’s Cyclone Nigris

  9. By the spread to numerous countries, it was able to develop into a religion

  10. Status of Buddhism • Spread to almost all the countries of the world • Population: 350 million • Half of the practice is Mahayana Buddhism
