“Teaching Children to Fish.” 21st Century Afterschool Programs PD By: LaToya Prescod -Williams 21st-century coordinator/Community Educator
Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.
The goal of the 21st Century program is to enhance the lives of Title I students, by providing opportunities they could not be afforded outside the school setting. By bridging these gaps we can bring school and community together. • The 21st Century program should be • Fun • Innovative • Academically inclined
While the content is outlined in the grant, the focus is on academic skills applied to multiple subjects. This will increase over all test scores and self-esteem. For example: • The focus of our program is building fundamental skills. Students should acquire skills to promote self advocacy and decision-making in the area of academics and social-emotional well being. Self advocacy What do I do when I don't understand what's being taught or asked? How do I ask the right question(s)? Study skill How should I take notes? How do I study for a test? Problem Solving How can I guess words I don't know? ( prefixes, suffixes, root words and endings) When do I add, subtract or divide?

All missing or broken non-consumable materials need to be reported to lead teachers. • For warehouse orders, expect a week turn around. • Other orders have to go through a biding process, so anticipate a longer wait time. • If you need a single purchase, generally under $25, please let me know and I can try and pick it up for you.
