Family Life Moving to Austin, Texas, in 1882, Porter married, and had a daughter. HardTimes • In early 1898 Porter was found guilty of embezzlement charges and sentenced to five years in an Ohio prison • While in prison Porter started to write short stories to earn money to support his daughter • Three years and about a dozen short stories later, he emerged from prison as "O. Henry"
Claim to Fame “Twist”, ironic endings • He moved to New York City, where over the next ten years, he published over 300 stories and gained worldwide acclaim as America's favorite short story writer. • Porter died in 1910 at the age of 47 • An alcoholic, he died virtually penniless.
