Laurelhurst’s Mission StatementLaurelhurst School is a safe and caring community where everyone works together to create academic excellence for lifelong learning and social responsibility.
Vision for Laurelhurst as a K-8 School Laurelhurst K-8 School’s focus will directly complement Grant High School’s focus on Math, Science, Arts and Technology. Laurelhurst students will be exceptionally well prepared to rise to the academic and social challenges and experiences that high school presents. Students will leave Laurelhurst as self-directed, compassionate, responsible and thoughtful young citizens.
The K-8 School Model: *Maintains the community/neighborhood school tradition.* Students face fewer transitions and parents stay more involved in their child’s schooling experience.* K-8 schools increase academic success for some students who don’t do well in the traditional middle school mode. * Schools are considered to be “Elementary” schools up through 8th grade, whether in a middle school or K-8 setting, so start and end times will be the same as they have been. * Smaller school setting provides for relationships with caring adults during early adolescence.
We envision a staff who:* Have a strong understanding and experience working with adolescent students.* Will engage students in challenging academic work.* Are highly qualified to teach required academic content.* Will provide students with personal and academic support to increase achievement while acknowledging and understanding their development and growth as adolescent learners.
We envision a school that:* Focuses on research using technology as a learning tool for all 4th – 8th graders. * Teaches students the same curriculum that is offered to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders across the district and state. * Continues to integrate art into the core curriculum.* Offers enriching learning experiences such as: P.E., Second Language, Music (choir, band).* Creates opportunities for leadership, service learning and clubs.
