2. Beware of scholarship scams! • These scam-spotting rules are from www.FastWeb.com: • Don’t pay money to get money. • Too good to be true? It probably is. • Spend time, not money. • Legitimate scholarships are never guaranteed. • Feel suspicious? Trust your instinct.

3. A few tips…… • Present yourself well. Neatness counts. • Check your spelling on everything. • Be sure your name is on each page submitted. • Submit all requested information, and submit it on time. • Pay attention to the deadline/due date.

4. www.cappex.com • Scholarships made easy! Cappex.com is giving away thousands of dollars in scholarships for college. • All you need to apply for scholarships is a Cappex profile. One profile makes you eligible to apply for many different scholarships. • Once your profile is complete, click on the scholarships tab and apply. Scholarships will be given to students with well-rounded profiles, so don't hold back on the details when applying for scholarships. • Once you create your profile, applying for Cappex scholarships is as easy as one click. 7. https://www.horatioalger.org//scholarships/index.cfm • Eligibility for Scholarships • The eligibility criteria to be considered for National Scholarships and Horatio Alger State Scholarship Programs are as follows: • a strong commitment to pursuing and completing a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. • critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred, if higher explanation must be provided); • involvement in co-curricular and community activities; • demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity • a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; and • United States Citizenship. • Thirty-seven $4,000 scholarships are awarded to California residents.

8. http://www.maldef.org/ • There are many ways to finance your higher education goals. • Students who are permanent legal residents or citizens can qualify for state or federal financial aid. • In addition, MALDEF encourages all students, regardless of immigration status, to seek private scholarships for their educational expenses. • Family savings and fundraising can supplement educational costs.

9. www.MeritAid.com • A comprehensive directory of merit scholarships and academic scholarships from colleges across the country. • Tell Merit Aid.com about yourself. They will show you colleges and merit aid scholarships that match. Best of all, you'll hear from great colleges that want you to apply.

10. Miss Teenage California • Miss Teenage California 2010 will be the recipient of a $10,000 College Scholarship to the college of her choice. • Candidates are evaluated in the areas of Academic Achievement & Activities, Personality, and Poise & Presence. • No later than October 30, tell Ms. Emery in the Career Center if you want to be nominated. • Check out www.Missteenageca.com for more information.

11. U.S. Service Academies • Students who apply for an appointment to a Service Academy must receive a Congressional nomination • US Military Academy at West Point, US Naval Academy at Annapolis, US Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, and US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point • Class of 2010 applicants must send completed application materials postmarked no later than November 1, 2009. • Application instructions and materials can be found at http://boxer.senate.gov/services/academy_recs

12. 2010 Poster Contest • Safe Jobs for Youth • First Prize $400; Second Prize $300; Third Prize $200 • Design a poster highlighting job safety and health. • Deadline: November 2, 2009 • Visit www.youngworkers.org for details and entry forms.

15. Seattle University • Sullivan Leadership Award • Scholarships from $11,000 to $18,500 per year to study at Seattle University www.seattleu.edu • Deadline November 15, 2009 • See also www.seattleu.edu/sullivan

16. Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award • The Coachella Valley’s Soroptimist International clubs award up to five young women (14-17 years of age) with Violet B. Richardson Awards every spring. • These monetary awards are based on volunteer/community service (amount to be determined based upon club funds available but at least $250 each). • Each of the awardees receives a cash award, and the charity for which they volunteer their time receives an equal monetary award. • Come to the Career Center for an application or the pdf application so you can fill it out online. • Completed applications are due November 21, 2009. • Karina Elizalde/Class of 2009 was one of last year’s winners.

17. www.colgate.com/hazlau • Colgate-Palmolive Company, has partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation on the scholarship program “Haz la U” to help young Latinos on their way to college. • Essay Question: How can education impact the heritage of future Hispanic generations to come? • Educational Grant Prizes: • (1) Grand Prize — $10,000 educational grant • (15) First Prizes — $1,000 educational grant • Application and essay due by November 30, 2009

21. DHSHS Scholarship Application • Due December 11, 2009, in the Career Center. • Download it to your student drive from the DHSHS website • Prepares you to have components you need to submit other scholarship applications (see next page).

DHSHS Scholarship Application • When your completed DHSHS scholarship application is received in the Career Center, a scholarship file is made for you. • Copies of your application are submitted by Ms. Emery and your counselor for local scholarship opportunities when you fit specific eligibility requirements for GPA, test scores, activities, etc. • Members of scholarship committees read your application and make their decisions according to their own unique criteria. • At some point you may receive an invitation to be interviewed. • ALL scholarship applications will require time, energy and thought from you.

24. Financial Aid & FAFSA • Apply for FAFSA January 1 – March 2 • Colleges where you are accepted for admission will give you a financial aid offer to review

25. Start with the FAFSA • Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov • Before January 1, you can get an estimate of your eligibility, even before your senior year, by using FAFSA4caster. • www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov

26. Financial Aid Terms Scholarships are also free money for college and are usually based on your area of study or merit, such as good grades, special talents, or community service. Work Study or Student Employment Programs let you earn money for college in a job on or off campus. Loans are borrowed money that you must repay, usually with interest. Grants are money you don’t have to pay back and are usually based on financial need.

28. 2010 Presidential Scholarship at Montana State University • Full tuition waivers for up to four years for incoming freshmen entering Montana State University. • Application is online at www.montana.edu/ honors. • Due no later than January 5, 2010.

30. www.ithaca.edu/mlk • The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York • Awards range from $18,000 to full tuition each year in both merit-based and need-based aid • Application due by January 15, 2010

31. www.ithaca.edu/parkscholars • The Park Scholar Awards cover the full cost of attendance—currently $43,840 (tuition, room, and board) per year; and • Include stipends for living expenses, books and a one-time computer purchase of $2,500 • Complete an Ithaca College application for admission by January 2, 2010. • Complete the Park Scholar Award application by January 15, 2010.

National Co-Op Scholarship Program • National Commission for Cooperative Education = 170 Merit Scholarships totaling $4.2 million • Application Deadline: February 15, 2010 • Complete your application online at www.co-op.edu • You need a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. • You must apply and be admitted to one of the eight NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities—such as, Johnson & Wales, Drexel University, Kettering University, etc. See their website for details.

34. Dr. Seuss College Scholarship • First Place $5,000 • Write an essay to the question asked about Dr. Seuss’s book, Oh, The Places You’ll Go! • Applications due by February 15, 2010.
