PRRSV control in Denmark Charlotte Sonne Kristensen Pig Research Centre Danish Agriculture & Food Council
Outline • PRRSV in Denmark • PRRSV eradication • Motivation of the farmers • Production loss • Antibiotic used • Conclusion
PRRSV in Denmark • First diagnose in 1992 • MLV Vaccination initiated 1996
PRRSV vaccination • Objective • to reduce the spread of PRRSV • To concider a national eradication (3 years) • Vaccination • 1000 herds vaccinated (July-December 1996) • Clinical outbreaks 2-3 month after vacc. • Disease in vaccinated and non-vaccinated neighbours • Vaccination stopped December 1996
PRRSV today • 43% of the herds have a PRRSV declaration • 73% of the sows • 39% of the finishers • 65% of the herds are declared free
PRRSV Partial depopulation AIAO Empty stable with continuous flow Purchase negative breeding animals Vaccination and quarantine Large success rate
We know • PRRSV status of almost half the herds • Location of all herds • Movement of all pigs • Size of all herds • Age groups represented at each herd • How to eradicate PRRSV
Motivation of the farmers • Production loss • Antibiotic use
Production loss ACUTE • Weekly production data from 8 herds with acute outbreak of PRRSV
Production loss ACUTE Weaned/litter Liveborne/litter Dead/litter Start/end PRRSV
Conclusion ACUTE • Outbreak 12-60 weeks (average 33 weeks) • Loss sow/pen place +€5 to -€100 (average €31) • PRRSV US>PRRSV EU
Production loss CHRONIC • Production data annually collected • Merged with SPF status • Average on selected production parameters calculated
Conclusion CHRONIC • A little bit on mortality
Antibiotic use and PRRSV • PRRSV prevalence among • 50 herds with highest antibiotic use • 50 herds with lowest antibiotic use • No difference
What should motivate? • Production loss- acute MAYBEE • Production loss- chronic NO • Antibiotic use NO
Difficult to motivate farmers • No general coordinated PRRSV control in Denmark • Besides………………………..
Challenges • Antibiotic use • EU Ban on Sow Stalls • Feed prices
