Child: Positive Feelings Is there anything to be happy about? There is a good chance I could get better. What will my friends think? They will maybe support and stick with me through it. How will they treat me at school? They will maybe start a fundraiser to raise money to help find a solution for my disease.
Child Information • I was born with sickle cell. Sickle cell is when some of your blood cells are shaped like crescent moons.
Doctor • What are the symptoms of Sickle Cell Anemia? • Answer for children. fatigue and shortness of breath irritability jaundice (yellowish disco ration of skin and eyes. • Answer for adulthood and adolescence . Delayed puberty (in young teenagers) severer joint pain progressive anemia leg sores gum disease and vision problems.
Doctor • How do we find out more about this disorder? • We could keep studying ,reading books and performing more experiments on this disorder. Doctors and scientist are researching more on this disorder. • What ways can we help the symptoms? • Doctors give them supplements of folic acid. Some people take a drug called hydroxyurea , and some have to take large doses of narcotics
Doctor • How did the child inherit the disorder? • The child could have sickle cell because they inherited it because a parent has the disease and the other has the trait. A child has 25% of getting it if a parent has the disorder and one has the trait. A child has a 50% if both parents have sickle cell disorder.

The hemoglobin is a molecule in red blood cells that deliver oxygen to cells throughout the body. People with sickle cell have atypical hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin S which can distort red blood cells into a sickle shape.
