  2. Asia* may not be major contributor to global malaria but indeed plays a critical role…….. Estimated Malaria Cases Estimated Malaria Deaths Source: World Malaria Report, 2011 *19 Asian countries: 10 in WHO SEAR, 7 Asian countries in WHO WPR, and 2 in WHO EMR.

  3. Huge diversity in Asian malaria endemic countries 19 endemic countries in Asia Sri Lanka, Malaysia and RoK are in national elimination phase Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines are in sub-national elimination phase Bhutan and DPRK are in pre-elimination phase

  6. Six countries have reduced malaria confirmed cases by >75%

  7. Challenge is to ensure that ALL 19countries achieve 75% target by 2015

  10. Reaching unreached populations is difficult challenge • WHO: • Migrants, ethnic, forest workers, • WHERE: • Difficult areas, forests • WHY: • Critical for malaria elimination • HOW: • Strengthen commitment, programme and health system • Involve communities

  12. Many challenges…. but none insurmountable

Conclusions • Asia has 15% global malaria burden but • Drug resistant malaria in Asia is a potential threat to global health security • Vivax malaria is a serious threat that cannot be neglected • Asia can also support global malaria efforts • Asia has a vibrant pharmaceutical and commodity industry and • Most of WHO prequalified manufacturers are in Asia • WHO has • Globally accepted strategies and plans (GMAP and G-PARC), strong presence in and close collaborative relationship with all Asian countries • With available strategies, development of new improved tools and innovative delivery mechanisms, knowledge and commitment, it should be possible to achieve targets • Working together, we can achieve it.
