  1. Peanut Butter and ? Sandwiches: YUM!

  2. Step 1: Observation • We’ve all seen and/or had a peanut butter sandwich. • How do you prefer yours? • Does everyone like theirs the same?

  3. Step 2: Question • The question must be about something that can be measured…tested. • Do THS Freshmen students prefer peanut butter and _____________ or peanut butter and _____________sandwiches?

  4. Things to Think About: Variables • Manipulated: the one thing being changed in the experiment honey vs. mayo • Responding: what’s changing because of the manipulated variable preference • Controlled: these are things that stay the same during the experiment amount of P.B. (1 ounce) temperature (68 degrees) type of bread

  5. Step 3: Hypothesis/Prediction • Follow the IF, THEN, BECAUSE format. If….manipulated variable, then……responding variable, because…..rationale/reason why. Ifpeanut butter sandwiches are made, one with honey and the other with mayonaise, thenstudents will prefer peanut butter and honey over peanut butter and mayonnaise becausehoney has a high sugar content and teenagers love sugar.

  6. Materials: Keep in Mind • We need to have enough materials to do this experiment on 5 people • bread = 1 slice per sandwich 5 sandwiches 2 different types of sandwiches --------------------- 10 slices of bread per trial • Instead of just saying “bread” you will say 10 slices of white bread. Now, make your list (approx. 10).

  7. Step 4: Materials List • Make a complete list of the materials you will need in order to conduct this experiment. • 10 pieces of white bread • 10 ounces of Adam’s peanut butter (1 ounce/sandwich) • 5 ounces of honey • 5 ounces of Best Foods Mayonnaise • 1 butter knife • 5 paper plates • 5 cups • 5 blindfolds • 1 two liter bottle of Sprite • Is there anything else needed???

  8. Step 5: Procedure • Procedures need to be specific so someone can make the peanut butter and jelly sandwich and do the experiment exactly the same as you did. • What’s your manipulated variable? • What’s your responding variable? • Name 2 controlled variables. • Now list the steps to be taken…the procedure (about 15). • Place 1 piece of white bread on a paper plate. • Evenly spread 1 ounce of Adam’s peanut butter on one slice of bread. • Evenly spread 1 ounce of (68 degrees)honey over the peanut butter.

  9. Procedure continued… • Fold the bread in half. • Repeat steps 1 through 4 three more times to total 5 peanut butter and honey room temperature sandwiches. • Repeat steps 1 through 4 using 1 ounce of Best Foods Mayonnaise (68 degrees) instead of the honey to create a total of 5 peanut butter and mayo sandwiches. • Blindfold 5 THS freshmen students. • Have each student drink a 4 oz cup of Sprite before eating each sandwich.

  10. Procedure continued … • Have each student eat a peanut butter and honey sandwich. • Have each student drink 4 ounce cup of Sprite. • Have each student eat a peanut butter and mayo sandwich. • Have each of the 5 students identify which sandwich was preferred and why. • Record information • Remove blindfold • **Note: you do not have to repeat the study because you have already done it 5 times!!

  11. Step 6: Data Analysis Student Preference of Honey over Mayonnaise on Peanut Butter Sandwiches

  12. Step 7: Conclusion • State whether your hypothesis was correct. • State how you know by using your data. • State whether the responding variable was or was not affected by the manipulated variable. My prediction was correct, THS freshmen preferred PB and Honey sandwiches over PB and Mayonnaise sandwiches. Data showed that 3 students preferred honey whereas only 2 students preferred mayonnaise. Therefore, THS freshmen prefer peanut butter & honey over peanut butter & mayonnaise sandwiches.

  13. Applications • I wonder if students would prefer PB and mayo over PB and honey if the sandwiches were chilled. • I was surprised that anybody liked PB and mayo!
