  3. Re-introducing Synergistech • Pre-1995 • 1995 to 2001 • 2006 and beyond • Goal: to be a trusted, candid advisor and ally to all involved in the job search

  4. What I see • Recession’s over. • Spending on IT’s perking up a little. • Companies are more cost-conscious • globalized workforce • persistent pressure to ‘do more with less’ • managers don’t control their budgets • most-qualified people getting near-Y2K pay

  5. Survivors say… • I’m exhausted • I’m discouraged • Tell me my market value • Help me understand my options • I’m scared of the devil I don’t know

  6. Signs it’s time to move on • If this describes you, let’s talk: • Overworked? • Powerless? • Unappreciated? • Stale?

  7. Motivations • Professional advancement • change or focus your responsibilities • get a promotion • switch industries • rearrange the politics

  8. Motivations (2) • Better… • income • benefits • location • hours • job ‘security’ • advancement potential

  9. Caveats • Job transitions can fail if you’re… • burnt out • feeling exploited • afraid (and don’t face it) • uninformed about your new company • rushed to decide

  10. Assessing your options • Don’t leave until you understand… • market demand for what you do • competitiveness of your skills • pros and cons of staying put

  11. Grabbing opportunities • Use a recruiter or go solo? • Research the market • Job boards, aggregators, listservs • Refine your skills, overhaul your resume • Use beacons to combat black holes • didtheyreadit.com, etc

  12. Don’t give up! • Get support for your job search • STC • peers • ex-colleagues • Synergistech • Don’t fall prey to apathy
