IDH Roles • Pioneer: develops and disseminates innovative strategies to transform supply chains and address tough global social and environmental issues.Convener:builds coalitions of government s, NGO’s, companies, labor unions, donors, financial institutions etc.. Program developer: convenes and develops ambitious work plans. • Investor: with a five year co-funding grant of € 105 M. IDH investments in market transformation programs are at least 1:1 match funded by private sector entities. • Performance driver:monitors progress, evaluates and disseminates lessons learned and initiates 3rd party impact assessmenton MDGs 1,7 and 8

Why • Annual import European retail & trade 13.4 million tons, with a total value exceeding € 10 billion. • Issues: • Food security • Transparency and traceability of the value chain • Inclusion of smallholders • Water management (secure and improve irrigated production) • Labor conditions • Other Environmental issues • Potential Impact: • Substantial impact due to the labor intensive character of the industry • Institutional system innovation of creating global benchmark for social and environmental standards (GSCP)
