  1. Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 You will need Math book (pg. 210) whiteboard/marker/eraser Folder/notebook Bell Ringer A. List as many properties of parallelogram as you can. B. How are a parallelogram and square alike and different? C. Write the number 56,000,000 in scientific notation.

  2. Thursday Nov. 10, 2011 • You will need: • Math book • Folder/notebook • Calculator • Bell Ringer • A. What is the probability of rolling an odd number on a six sided dice? • B. What are the odds of rolling an odd number on a six sided dice?

  3. Friday Nov. 11, 2011 • You will need: • Math book • Folder/Notes • Calculator • Bell Ringer • A. Show the sample space for the probability of flipping a coin three times. • What is the probability of tossing a at least two heads?

  4. Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 • You will need: • Math book • Folder/notebook • Bell Ringer: • A. What is theoretical probability and experimental probability? (pg. 211) • B. What is a baseball players batting average if they hit 20 out of every 60 balls that are pitched at them?

  5. Lesson 32 Probability

  6. Probability can be expressed in decimals or percents.

  7. Probability • The likelihood that a particular event will occur. • To represent the probability of event A we use the notation P(A)

  8. Range of Probability • The Range of Probability is a ratio of favorable outcomes to possible outcomes. It is expressed as a number ranging from zero to one. • Remember that a ratio is a comparison of two numbers by division. • Look on pg. 210

  9. P(Event)= number of favorable outcomes number of possible outcomes

  10. Example 1 • The spinner show is spun once. What is the probability the spinner will stop • In sector A? • In sector A or B? • In sector A, B, C, or D?

  11. Odds • Is the ratio of the number of favorable to unfavorable outcomes. Expressed with a colon (:) • Favorable : Unfavorable

  12. Examples • What are the odds you will roll a 5 on a six sided dice? • What are the odds you will flip a heads on a coin?

  13. Compliment • If we know the probability of an event, we can find the probability of its complement by subtracting the probability from 1.

  14. Examples • What is the compliment of a .25 probability? • What is the compliment probability of an even that has a 50% chance of happening?

  15. Sample Space • Collection of possible outcomes • pg. 212-213

  16. Example • Nathan flips a coin three times. • Predict: which is more likely, that he will get heads at least once or that he will not get heads at least once. • Find the probability of getting heads at least once. • Find the probability of not getting heads at least once.

  17. Theoretical Probability • Found by analyzing a situation • Coin tossing • Dice rolling

  18. Experimental Probability • Determined statistically • Baseball statistics • Free throw shots
