Words to Know • Blacklist: A list of people who are not approved for employment • McCarthyism: Term named for Senator Joseph McCarthy’s campaign of accusing people of being communist • Fallout: The radioactive waste from a nuclear blast • Space Race: The competition among countries to be first in exploring space

  3. Hunt for Spies • 1938: Congress formed the HUAC: • House Un-American Activities Committee • Looked into secret Nazi and Communist activities in the U.S.

  4. HUAC • 1947: Looked into communism in the motion picture industry • Hunted for: • Writers • Actors • Directors -That once belonged to the communist party

  5. Blacklist • Movie industry people were called to Washington D.C. to be questioned by HUAC • Those who refused to testify were put on a blacklist • Being called to testify could ruin a career

  6. The Rosenbergs • Julius and Ethel Rosenberg: • Were not part of the film industry • 1951- accused of helping the communists: • Charged with giving atomic secrets to the Soviets during WWII • Found guilty: • Put to death in 1953

  7. Joseph McCarthy • Wisconsin Senator • Claimed to have knowledge of Communists working in the U.S. govt. • 1950 Speech, claimed to have list of 205 names of people working in the State Dept.: • List did not exist

  8. McCarthyism • Americans believed McCarthy was trying to save U.S. from Communist takeover: • Fear of communism • Others thought McCarthy was a danger to the U.S. • 1954, claimed there were Communists in the Army: • None of McCarthy’s charges were proven • Many people believed him • This fear remained throughout the 50’s

  9. Race for Arms • 1949-S.U. tested its first atomic bomb • 1952-Americans tested the first hydrogen bomb: • Many more times powerful • President Eisenhower ordered the military to build up its supply of nuclear bombs

  10. Atomic Weapons • Did not have to be used in war to be dangerous: • Fallout • Scientists feared atomic testing would poison the earth’s environment • Superpowers meet in the 50’s to talk about banning tests: • No agreement reached

  11. Race for Space • 1957-Soviet Union sent Sputnik into space: • First satellite • U.S. and S.U. were in a space race • 1958-U.S. launched Explorer 1: • U.S.’s first satellite • Congress set up NASA: • National Aeronautic and Space Administration

  12. NDEA • Americans were afraid the S.U. were ahead of the U.S. in the space race • 1958-Congress passed the National Defense Education Act: • Helped improve education in the U.S. • Gave money to students who needed money to go to college • Schools could build more science labs • Teachers could take courses to keep up with science and math • States could buy better teaching supplies
