Social Emotional Development in Kindergarten • Get along with others (peers, parents, teachers) • Problem Solve • Label and recognize feelings • Regulate behavior • How to be helpful • How to control impulses • Follow directions • Persisting on task • Engage in conversation and cooperative play • Healthy self concept
Reading Fundationsis a systematic program in the foundational skills for reading and spelling, emphasizing phonemic awareness, phonics-word study, high frequency word study, fluency, vocabulary, handwriting, and spelling. Reading Foundations • Phonemic awareness – rhyming, first sounds, sound switching • Phonics – letter names and sounds, long and short vowels, blends, digraphs • Sight words • Decoding CVC words • Reading simple sentences- “I like my dog.”
Reading Comprehension • Concepts of print (parts of a book) • Fiction & Non-fiction texts • Students ask and answer questions • Story elements • Retell Events in sequence with details
Differentiating Reading Instruction • Students are assessed to determine their current abilities with reading skills. • Students are placed in homogenous reading groups after testing and we have established the procedures for small group reading instruction. • Dibels @ BOY, MOY, EOY • Tier Intervention Groups
Thinking Maps • Visual tools for learning • 8 visual patterns • Used across the content areas • School-wide use
Writing Write from the Beginning • Daily journal writing • Teacher model • Illustrations include subject, event, and setting • Students illustrate and write • Details develop in pictures first • Writing begins with scribbles and random letters • Then, develops into writing words as they sound (inventive spelling is part of the process) - Next, write familiar/memorized words (sight words) - Last, write simple sentences to express ideas
Math How it’s taught • Develop conceptual understanding • Problem Solving tasks • Digging Deeper” • We look at the why • Kids explain their thinking using math vocabulary • Hands-On/manipulatives Concepts Covered Number Sense Shapes (2D & 3D) Writing numbers up to 20 Decomposing – break numbers apart Counting to 100 Addition/Subtraction Word Problems Classifying and counting
Field Trips We have many field trips planned but we are in need of Tax Credit money. The cost is $60.00 to fund field trips and class shirts. All payments are made through Infinite Campus. We are only able to take these trips with your support. Tax Credit, it is a wonderful opportunity to donate money to your child’s classroom as well as get the full amount refunded at tax time. • Married couples can donate up to $400 • Individuals can donate up to $200. • Additional donations can be made for smaller amounts such as $20, $30, $50. Infinite Campus • Please sign up if you haven’t already go to cusd80.com. Click on Grade Portal for more information. • Field trip/tax credit fees are paid in Infinite Campus. • Parents should regularly access their parent portal account to review your child’s progress • Some school communication will be sent through Infinite Campus • Grades, progress reports, and reports cards are all available through the portal. • Paper report cards will not be sent home.
Grading in Kindergarten • Grades are taken through observations, one on one assessment, and work samples. • First Conferences August 28 & August 29 • First progress report will be given at conference to share how your child adjusting to kindergarten in the areas of social-emotional, behavioral, fine motor, as well as some baseline data on their academics.
Spotlight Assembly Jacobson Essential Traits Spotlight • Each quarter students will be recognized for a “Be Kind” trait that compliments one of our Jacobson Growth Essentials. • Students will be recognized for the quarterly traits by having their name announced at the assembly and a picture with their teacher. • Teachers will also include a special note on the back of the student’s recognition certificate. Certificates will be given out in the individual classrooms.
