The Public Sphere at NewSchool (or the “forum” if you’re a day dreamer) is limited but active and confined to a few areas.
Running rampant and in constant flux, the act of simple bathroom witticism is clearly a prolific and widespread form of communication at Lang.
Though numerous, hall visitors seemed generally preoccupied. They were either in transit or in the depths of an existentialist melt-down. Either way, they weren’t paying attention to their surroundings.
Lang courtyard • Widely-used for smoking and socializing in between classes • Used for quiet time and studying during classes • Utilized and occupied by Lang students - “Lang territory”
65 Fifth Ave. Cafeteria • Public space in clear display and convenient location, therefore, the most used • Used for eating, studying, socializing and working in groups • Unofficial “Parsons space”
Cafeterias • Only three around campus - two of which are predominantly Parsons students • Public space well used, centered around food • Informal space to study
Computer Labs • Used by all students in all divisions • Various purposes -used for homework, reading e-mails, printing, surfing the web • Classrooms utilize technology and the internet (I,e. Blackboard, Lectures, Slides)
Advertising/Pop art still stands as a source of interest for passers-by on 5th Ave.
Attenn--Tion! Forced Attention Is a key to success
Bullet Points • People are busy and/or in transit at the New School. • No campus nor traditional “school” setting…hippies. • Food and Smoking are activities of the main social arenas. • Because flyers are numerous, unread and lost in the “bulk”, students resort to graffiti to voice their thoughts.
Bullet Points Cont’d… • There is a disconnect between and separate designated areas and for different divisions/schools. • Students and classrooms are connected through the Internet.
Proposal • Incentives (I,e. food, etc.) • Faculty Participation • Subversive advertising • “New School” lounge, cafeteria and/or forum (extension of incentives) • A concentration on informal means of advertising/communication. (I,e. grassroots form and content - Student-run, student-centered, student-geared)
In Action • Pass out food with New School Free Press Information • Faculty announcements in the classroom and inclusion in course assignments. • School-wide events with food, etc. (I,e. bake sale) • Free space: White wall/bulletin, sponsored by NSFP, where students can draw, write, etc. • Internet-based surveys, suggestions, etc.
