  4. Revalidation and you.............. .............Practice Hours How to meet the requirements You will be asked to declare that you have worked a minimum of 450 hours whilst practising as a registered nurse or midwife. Your practice hours will relate to your own specific scope of practice and are not limited to direct patient care. Some roles will include non-clinical practice, however you must be in a role based on your professional capacity, using your nursing/midwifery knowledge, skills & experience. It is recommended that you keep a record of the hours worked in your portfolio, as you may be asked to provide evidence of this to the NMC.

  5. Revalidation and you.............. ............Continuing Professional Development How to meet the requirements You will be asked to declare that you have undertaken a minimum of 40 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) relevant to your scope of practice as a registered nurse or midwife. At least 20 of these hours must be ‘participatory’ this means you have interacted with others to learn, either physically or virtually. You must collect evidence and keep records that you have met these requirements, you will need to show this to your confirmer. The NMC may also ask to see this.

  6. Revalidation and you.............. ............Continuing Professional Development • You must keep a record of: • Dates on which the CPD was undertaken • CPD method e.g. Online learning, study day • Description of the learning activity, how it linked to your scope of practice, what you learnt and how you have applied this learning to your practice • Links between the CPD activity and the most relevant part of the Code • Number of CPD hours (including the number of participatory hours)

  7. Revalidation and you.............. ............Practice Related Feedback How to meet the requirements You must obtain at least 5 pieces of practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of your registration. Try to obtain feedback from a variety of sources. For example you might receive feedback from patients, carers, students, service users or colleagues. You can also obtain feedback through reviewing complaints, team performance reports and serious event reviews. You may also have received feedback through your annual appraisal.

  8. Revalidation and you.............. ............Reflection and Discussion How to meet the requirements You must record a minimum of 5 written reflections on the Code, your CPD and practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of your registration. Each reflection can be about CPD or feedback, or a combination of both. For example, you could create a reflective account on a particular topic which may have arisen through some feedback your team received, such as consent and confidentiality and identify how that relates to the Code.

  9. Revalidation and you.............. ............Reflection and Discussion How to meet the requirements You must have a professional development discussion with another NMC registrant, covering your reflections on the Code, your CPD and practice-related feedback prior to confirmation. You must ensure that the NMC registrant with whom you had your professional development discussion signs a form recording their name, NMC Pin, email, professional address and postcode, as well as the date you had the discussion. In most instances this will take place at the same time as confirmation.

  10. Revalidation and you.............. ............Confirmation from a Third Party How to meet the requirements The NMC will ask you to provide the name, NMC Pin or other professional identification number (where relevant), email, professional address and postcode of the ‘appropriate third party confirmer’. The ‘appropriate third party confirmer’ is your line manager. We strongly recommend that you obtain confirmation from your line manager wherever possible. Your line manager does not have to be an NMC registrant to ‘confirm’ you.

  11. Revalidation and you.............. ............Keeping a Portfolio • Your portfolio should contain evidence of: • The feedback you have received and how you have used these to improve your practice. (Minimum of 5 instances) • The CPD activities and hours you have undertaken. (Minimum of 40 hours, 20 hours must be participatory learning) • The reflective accounts you have completed explaining what you learnt from the CPD activities and/or feedback. Including how you have changed or improved your practice as a result, and how this is relevant to the Code. (Minimum of 5 written reflective accounts) • The reflective discussion and confirmation (Usually both of these will be carried out by your line manager)
