  1. Pluto and it’s Moons BTraftonand TSconing

  2. Size Pluto’s diameter is 2,302 km. Pluto’s diameter is about 1/5 the diameter of Earth’s. Pluto is 0.2% the mass of Earth. The surface area of Pluto is only 3.3% the surface area of Earth, and about the same surface area as Russia.

  3. General Color and Unique Surface Features Pluto is light brown in color and the planets’ surface conditions consist of a rocky core surrounded by a mantle of water ice, with ices such as methane and nitrogen frost coating its surface

  4. How long is a day and year on Pluto A day on Pluto is equivalent to 6.4 Earth days and a year on Pluto is equivalent to 248 Earth years.

  5. Density in relation to Earth Pluto has a density that is 0.3% the density of Earth.

  6. Gravity in relation to Earth Pluto has about 1/10 the gravity of Earth. If you are 100 pounds on Earth, you are a little less than 10 pounds on Pluto.

  7. Atmosphere Composition Pluto's atmosphere is mainly composed of methane, nitrogen and poisonous carbon monoxide that likely comes from ice on the dwarf planet's surface

  8. Surface Composition Pluto is mostly made of 30%-50% ice with 50-70% rock mixed in.

  9. Interior Composition Pluto has a small rocky core covered in large amounts of water ice all the way to the surface. Decaying radioactive elements inside Pluto would heat the interior of the dwarf planet, allowing the rock and ice to move around.

  10. Magnetic Field It isn't known if Pluto has a magnetic field, but its small size and slow rotation suggest little or no magnetic field

  11. Moons Pluto has 5 moons called Charon, Nix, Hydra, Kerberos, and Styx. Charon is almost half the size of Pluto. Nix and Hydra are roughly 20 to 70 miles wide. Kerberos is roughly 8 to 21 miles. Finally, Styx is 6 to 15 miles wide.

  12. Unique Things about Pluto Pluto has a tilted orbit unlike the other planets making it closer to Neptune on certain occasions. Pluto was first ruled as a planet, but is now ruled a dwarf planet. Pluto and Charon orbit a common point in space, unlike Earth where our common point of orbit is inside of Earth.

  13. Recap • Pluto is 0.2% the mass of Earth and is 2,302 km • Pluto is light brown in color and the planets’ surface conditions consist of a rocky core surrounded by a mantle of water ice • A day on Pluto is equivalent to 6.4 Earth days and a year on Pluto is equivalent to 248 Earth years • Pluto has a density that is 0.3% the density of Earth. • Pluto has about 1/10 the gravity of Earth. • Pluto's atmosphere is mainly composed of methane, nitrogen and poisonous carbon monoxide • Pluto is mostly made of 30%-50% ice with 50-70% rock mixed in. • Pluto has a small rocky core covered in large amounts of water ice all the way to the surface with radioactive elements inside • It isn't known if Pluto has a magnetic field, but its small size and slow rotation suggest little or no magnetic field • Pluto has 5 moons called Charon, Nix, Hydra, Kerberos, and Styx • Pluto and Charon orbit a common point in space, unlike Earth where our common point of orbit is inside of Earth. Pluto was first ruled a planet, but is now a dwarf planet. And Pluto’s tilted orbit can make it closer to Neptune sometimes.
