  2. Cash handling………….. • Do you know of any risks associated with cash handling in the general community? • Do you know of any incidents in the general community? • Why do you think these have happened? 2.

  3. Cash Handling ………… To prevent, minimise & control hazards & risks associated with cash handling it is mandatory to: • IDENTIFY the hazards, risks, causes & risk factors • ASSESS the level & likelihood of injury &/or illness or impact on welfare • Implement CONTROL measures & then monitor & evaluate them for continuous improvement 3.

  4. Cash Handling……… An OH&S Hazard can be: • Any object, material, substance, equipment, plant, situations, work practice, workenvironment or work layout that exposes or, has the potential to expose people to risks to their health, safety and welfare while at work. • Risks are what could happen to health, safety & welfare of employees while at work 4.

  5. Cash Handling………. Hierarchy of Control • If it is not reasonably practical to ELIMINATE the hazard and risks, the hazards and risks must be minimised & controlled to the lowest level possible by implementing the following measures, in the order listed, where and when reasonably practicable. • Usually a combination of measures is used and is arrived through consultation with employees. 5.

  6. Cash Handling………. Substitution….. Substituting the hazard with something or, a system, that is less hazardous and gives rise to lesser risk/s. e g. • Avoid cash - encourage the use of credit card, BPay or electronic transfer system and methods • Use safer work method and procedures • Vary procedures & routines 6.

  7. Cash Handling…….. Isolate and separate people from the hazard and risks • Work in a secure, protected environment designed for the purpose • Security doors, screens & barriers • Ensure that cash handling is out of view 7.

  8. Cash Handling……….. ENGINEERING (built-in) measures to minimise hazards and risks • Metal or screen shutters that close quickly • Security door at canteen entrance • Security doors with remote electronic opening • CCTV in entry/access areas not visible from the office • Adequate space & seating in the foyer to prevent visitors observing the office activities 8.

  9. Cash Handling………….. ENGINEERING measures continued…… Design the layout and fittings of the work area for maximum safety • Good line of sight from the office of entry areas • Good lighting in entry and work areas • Instantly accessible alarm system – e g. under desks • Time delayed safe opening system 9.

  10. Cash Handling……… ADMINISTRATIVE measures • Minimisation of cash – use of electronic transfer • Restricted entry to the work area • Photo identification • Adequate staff levels at critical times • Procedure checklists to ensure that safe procedures are known & followed

  11. Cash Handling……….. ADMINISTRATIVE measures continued…. • Vary when and where money is collected e g. classrooms rather than the office – more people about • Vary when & where money is handled or transported 10.
