Coordination, Data Management, and Enhancement of theInternational Arctic Buoy Programme (IABP)PIs: Ignatius Rigor (PSC), Pablo Clemente-Colon & LTJG James Brinkley (NIC) IABP has 23 Participants from 8 different countries, including the WCRP and EUMETNET. IABP Monitors air, sea and ice using drifting buoys. Coordination: the IABP Participants and Collaborators share equipment and logistics to maintain the Arctic buoy network. Data Management: Data are released in near real time on the GTS for operations. We collect all the buoy data, produce the research data bases, and distribute this data to the science community through http://iabp.apl.washington.edu. Observations are used for both operations and research. forecasting weather and ice conditions, validation and forcing of climate models, validation of satellite data, and for studies of climate change. Contributors to US Interagency Arctic Buoy Program: IARC, NASA, NIC, NOAA (ARO, NESDIS, OCO), NSF, Navy (NAVO, NRL, ONR), USCG.

Coordination and Integration Plans • IABP Participants and Collaborators plan to deploy: • 120+ buoys (Average is 25 buoys/year.) deployed by over 18 field campaigns. • 22 Automated Drifting Stations: i.e. coordinated clusters of ocean, ice, and met. buoys [NPEO (1), DAMOCLES (15), Beaufort Gyre (6)]. • USIABP plans to purchase and/or deploy 43-44 of the 120 buoys: • 3 AXIB: New “Airborne eXpedable Ice Beacon (AXIB)” buoy that can be deployed by parachute and is designed to survive freeze up. • 2-3 ICEXAIR: To be deployed by NAVO with 4 ICEXAIR buoys provided by Environment Canada. • 2 Ice Beacons deployed by Enviroment Canada north of Eureka. • 30 SVP-B to fill the SLP data holes in the buoy network especially in the Eurasian Basin deployed by various assets. • 6 SVP-TC80 to monitor ocean temperatures in the Eurasian Basin deployed by NAVO. • Maintaining the buoy array is challenging, especially in the Eurasian Arctic where buoys are quickly swept away from during the recent predominance of moderate to high-AO conditions. • For more details, see http://IABP.apl.washington.edu/Deploy2008/.
