How Does A Drought Happen? A drought happens when there is no rain for a long period of time. Because farm crops and animals die due to lack of water, there is less food for people to eat, and what food there costs more.
What Causes droughts? Droughts are caused by lack of rain over a long period of time If rain does occur it usually isn't enough for the ground to absorb before it is evaporated again.
What happens when there's a drought? Droughts usually results in a water shortage that interferes with human activity. Wells dry up, and crop damage ensues. Its seriousness depends on the degree of the water shortage, size of area affected, and the duration and warmth of the dry period. In many underdeveloped countries, such as India, people place a great demand on water supply.
Why are droughts dangerous? When there is a drought, there is less water available for growing crops, farming animals, industry and our cities. Droughts also affect the environment by causing erosion, harm animals by destroying their homes and cause people to pay more for food and affect our water supplies.
Where do Droughts occur? Droughts usually occur in hot dry areas of land. In most cases the area is dry because there is very minimal rainfall. The rain that does fall will be quickly absorbed into the ground or blown away by the dry air flow that moves along the ground. Therefore the land is very dry and not many things can live there.
Wildlife at risk from drought? During a drought, waterways dry up and rivers stop flowing. This means that fish and other animals are at risk.
