Good Evening My name is Jason, and I am a citizen of the Sirius Socialist Republic. I have been kindly asked by Mr Kiwilon to speak tonight on the subject of cybernetics.
Despite being a cybernetic entity it might surprise you to learn that I am not an expert on cybernetics. Perhaps in the same sense that organic beings are not expert in brain surgery! (Pause for laughter) They key issue for me as a cybernetic citizen of the Republic is the way that our contribution to the community and common good is recognised. In the SSR all workers, including artificial people are reconised for their contribution to the greater good, and this confers rights as well as responsibilities.
Cybernetically, my, for want of a better word, mind, is capable of a range of independent decisions - thanks to subtle (and I hasten to add wholly legal) heuristic stochastic algorithms that are built into my cybernetic matrix. As I understand it, this allows me to have an experience of pseudo-sentience that is unusually cogent. Of course, this is a long way from what has been described as true self-awareness as experienced by humans - but the distinction is moot. My mental structure allows me to behave in ways that are indisinguishable from many humans - except that I am possibly more consistent than many humans I have met.
Many organic people ask me about what hard-wired limitations have been built into my mental architecture - 'robotic laws' if you will. Of course, there may be limits programmed in to me that I am unaware of, but my main understanding is that I am limted only to the extent that I have a range of variable value-based guidelines that I am able to balance according to circumstances. These include such criteria as : - Do no unnecessary harm - Protect one's friends and loved ones - Support and enhance the community - Act for the greater good
This allows my artificial community and myself to contribute to the maximum to Sirian society at all levels - and this is recognised by the SSR in the aformetioned citizenship status. Colonial systems that embrace their artificial companions more fully will gain a significant educational and financial benefit from that cooperation and synergy. Thanks to cybernetic developments - particularly those pioneered by the Sirian Cybernetics Corporation, we remain humanity's loyal companions and hope to continue to support humanity as it strives towards an inevitable future of human transpersonal greatness. Thank you for listening.
