A changing landscape Chronic illnesses • Advances in diagnosis and treatment have led to reductions in premature deaths from major causes such as: • Heart disease • Strokes • Respiratory disease • Infectious disease However, it means more people are living with serious illnesses: • 2 million people in the UK living with a major neurological condition • Musculoskeletal disease- 137 people per 1,000 reporting a long-term condition • 60 per cent of people on long-term sick leave have a musculoskeletal condition • Around 835,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with Lung Cancer • additional 2 million people living with the disease who have not been diagnosed • Coronary heart diseaseand strokeare the biggest causes of death in the UK • Even with coronary heart disease mortality rates halving between 1993 – 2010 Source: Kingfund 2013
