An old man lives in a house in a neighborhood full of many families of all ages. On his street there are often young children yelling, small dogs barking, bicycles ringing their bells as they pass by and a rock band that rehearses in their garage. Every day the old man walks down through the noisy street to the rock band and tells them to "BE QUIET!" There are many reasons why he could be singling out the band to be quiet, but in this story there is in fact only main reason. Look at the map of the street and see if you can figure out why he only yells at the rock band to be quiet each day. Old Man's House Rock Band RING! RING! RING! RING! RING!
What is the dangerous aspect of the relationship between SOUND WAVES and your EARS?
TUNING FORK There are many different sizes for tuning forks. I have a tuning fork marked C256. That means that when I strike the tuning fork, it vibrates 256 times per second! When something vibrates at 256 times per second, it creates the note C.
PITCH The faster the waves travel, the higher the pitch will be Example of a two pitches The top pitch is high, the bottom pitch is low A pitch will be high or low depending on the size of the object creating the sound The smaller an object is, the faster vibrates The larger an object is, the slower it vibrates
Relating this concept to musical instruments A pitch will be high or low depending on the size of the object creating the sound The smaller an object is, the faster vibrates The larger an object is, the slower it vibrates ie: Boomwhackers Large Boomwhackers vibrate slowly and create a low pitch. Small Boomwhackers vibrate quickly and create a high pitch.

VOLUME The higher the waves, the louder the pitch Quiet Loud
To Review: The Frequency of a wave determines the Pitch of a sound (how low or high the sound is) The Amplitude of a wave determines the Volume of a sound (how quiet or loud the sound is) Match the red and blue words to their sound waves Loud High Note Low Note Quiet
