3. Journal: Thursday, September 29th, 2011 Why do you think the Ancient Egyptian civilization is considered one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world?
Explain your answer fully.
4. Middle Kingdom 2055-1650 B.C.
“Golden Age of Stability”
Period of Expansion- conquered Nubia, traders sent into Africa and Fertile Crescent
Pharaoh- public works, becoming one of the people
No pyramids- built desert tombs
5. Hykos Middle Kingdom invaded by Hykos
Used horse drawn carriages and easily defeated the Egyptians
Ruled for 100 years teaching the Egyptians
Learned bronze working, mastered military skills
Egyptians drove out Hykos and reunited Egypt
6. New Kingdom 1550-1070 B.C.
Creation of an empire
Very Powerful!
New social order- women gain more freedom
Amenhotep IV and Queen Nefertiti- introduced monotheism to Egypt
Closed all other temples
After death, Egypt went back to multiple gods and re-opened the temples- Tutankhamen
7. New Kingdom Rulers Hatshepsut- woman pharaoh, built great temple
Led the army, sent off traders to distant lands
Ramses II- regained control of Asian territory
Last great pharaoh
Statues still stand all over Egypt in his honor
