  14. Farewell Discourse • Jesus promises to send the Spirit as a paraclete (parakletos) • Parakletos- “counselor” or “advocate” • What do we notice about the Spirit in the following? • John 14:16-20, 26-27 • John 15:26-27 • John 16:5-16 • The Spirit will meditate the presence of the Father and the Son to disciples through teaching, guiding, and comforting them

  15. Food for Thought • John 5:17-18 • God is continually working • Christ’s proclamation leads to provocation of the Jews • John presents the most exalted Christology in the New Testament among the four Gospels • In contrast, Synoptics place great emphasis on Jesus’ calling/training the Twelve, sending them out as apostles to preach and to heal

  16. Assignment • Review slides/notes gathered in this Gospel CE series. • Think of questions/comments to pose for next week for the Q&A session.

  17. Questions? • Citation of Sources and Bibliography • Fee, Gordon D. & Douglas Stuart. How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth. 3rd ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2003. • Strauss, Mark L. Four Portraits, One Jesus: A Survey of Jesus and the Gospels. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2007.
