Soil Fertility • IITA and its research for development partners are working towards the development of productive short fallow systems • leguminous cover crops • leguminous food crops in intercropping • studies on the role of mycorrhizal fungi in the nutrition of yam plants • screening of yam germplasm for nutrient use efficiency • symptoms of nutrient deficiency in yams recently published for use in field diagnosis (Shwachi et al. 2004) • review of fertilizer application in yam based systems in West Africa to be published soon
Key Challenges to Yam Production • Planting materials – high cost and health status • High labour requirement • Germplasm –more productive varieties required • Declining soil fertility • Diseases and Pests (including weeds) • Post-harvest handling and processing • Expanded and diversified market opportunities
Producing Yam Seed Tubers IITA scientists and their partners have developed: • Rapid methods for mass propagation of high quality seed tubers • Methods for ensuring good seed tuber health in storage
