Our Plan to Improve the WSU Library Experience By The Hugonauts Kyle McCormick, BatoolSaad, Lauren Porter
The Problem • Wayne has recently updated its online library interface. • Why is that a problem? • Unfortunately, many students do not know what has changed. • As such, they cannot make use of the new features. • The update was expensive, and no one is using it.
Research Methods • Interviews with students • Online survey results • Interview with a few library employees (Purdy/Kresge and UGL.) • Anecdotal evidence from personal time in the libraries (people loudly complaining.)
What needs to happen • Students need to become educated about the changes in an easy and affordable way. • Transforming them from this… • Into this.
Possible Solutions • # 1 - Combine the C&IT and Library Support Budget. • # 2- Degree requirement to work at Library for those students in the College of Library and Information Science before finding practical opportunities outside the university. • # 3 - Hold Workshops by C&IT employees to educate students on the new technology for the library system. • # 4 - The libraries host fundraisers.
Solution Critiques • #1 – Library Budget = smallest C&IT Budget = biggest (Good Idea) • #2 - Constant influx of inexperienced personnel - same thing that happened in Vietnam. (Bad Idea) • #3 - The work itself falls under C&IT’s umbrella of duty, anyway. (Good Idea) • #4 – It’s just a bake sale. (Good Idea for the desperate – otherwise Bad Idea)
Our Final Recommendation • We proposed that solutions #1 and #3 be undergone together. • Library gets some C&IT money, C&IT receives slightly lessened workload. • C&IT trains students and library personnel, who will share the information with others hungry for knowledge.
