Our Experience By Lucy, Ekrha, Charlie and Asif
Ward 16 On ward 16 it was a mixture ward ranging from drugs, Alcohol, Dementia to Cancer patients. Ward 16 ranged from patients from the age of 23-94. Ward 16 ranged from variable difficulties so we had bed bound patients with all care ranging to mobile patients who didn’t need any help with care.
Ward 4 Ward 4 was for the elderly. There were patients that had Dementia, Parkinson's, Cancer and Pneumonia. The age range was from 60+. Each individual had different care needs, some were more able to do things for themselves than others, such as feeding themselves. Some patients had mild problems whereas some were more severe.
Ward 11 • On ward 11 it was mostly older people that have been ready for discharge. • Some had long standing illness were others were just in for routine illness • Every individual was different and had there own personal ways. • I had to help with personal care and sometimes feed them as they were unable to feed themselves.
Ekrha My experience on ward 4 was enjoyable. My tasks included assisting patients with personal care, transferring them in and out of bed, assisting them with feeding, documenting patient records whenever needed to, making beds and ensuring the bay I was working on was in a clean state. My first week on the ward was hard as I didn’t know much about what needed to be done or where much of the equipment was. The more I worked on each bay, I learnt about what tasks needed to be done so I started to work more independently. The staff were very helpful and supportive. After my apprenticeship I have decided to do an Access Course in Nursing and then go to University to complete my Nursing Degree.
Lucy I enjoyed working on Ward 4, I found some tasks hard in the first week, but has the weeks carried on I felt like I grew with the experience and gained more knowledge and skills. I was assisting with personal care, transferring them in and out of bed, assisting them with feeding, documenting patient records. I found my first week on the Ward very hard as I didn’t have much training before going onto the ward, So when staff were asking me to do tasks, I didn’t have a clue what to do. But most of the staff were supporting and willing to help me and show me the guidelines, and the correct way to do things. As the weeks went on I felt like I was able to work more independent and of my own personal knowledge of patients and the hospital environment.
Asif My learning curve on ward 16 was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed working with the staff on the ward and the housekeeper Jan was a funny lady, She was my homie. On my first week I was mainly shadowing learning how things were run in a hospital. After the first week I started to take more responsibility, started washing patients myself, getting them onto the commode myself so I felt more responsible, and I felt better in myself knowing I am helping the staff and the patients on the ward, but I still struggle to put pads on patients. Before starting working on the ward I was dreading doing personal care I just thought I was going to end up being sick before I even clean a patient. As the days went along it just became a regular routine and although its not a nice thing to do I just got along with it. I felt pressured on two days as their was only 3 staff on and being new and getting into the routine it got a bit hectic and felt pressured.
Charlie • Working on ward 11. I found it very interesting and new as i have never done personal care before. I have learnt a lot on how to treat individuals and to keep patience. I enjoyed the experience it also made me feel good as i could see that i was helping people so that they were fit enough to go home. All the individuals were very good to me. I found a lot more respect for older people for doing this experience.
Ekrah, Lucy & Asif all want to apply to join the Bank staff after this Experience!
